Reports

Stipendiary Steward's Report

Stewards: K Hawea, L N McCutcheon, N Goodwin

Race Six: WOLLOMBI (L Cropp) was a little slow to begin. Near the point of the turn down the back straight HOUR GLASS (L Allpress) had to be steadied by its rider to avoid the heels of IRISH MAGIC (N Harris). The start of this race was delayed approximately 4-1/2 minutes due to SUPER SLAVIC (B Lammas) and THE ITALIAN JOB (R Stam) proving difficult to load.

Race Reports

Albert:

A great run from Twiggy today. After her usual shenanigans at the barrier where we got our moneys worth of TV time, she jumped well but didn't have the pace to cross them. She settled behind midfield, 3 wide, but was able to stride along comfortably using her big stride. She improved on the turn and finished strongly to run 4th, just over a length and a half behind the winner.

She was finishing better than anything in the field and is going to excell as she steps up over more ground. Ronald Stam was rapt with the run and said she was really enjoying being out there. So was he after a run like that.

I don't think we will get $69 on the tote next time.

Heather will now look at another 1400m for her before stepping her up to the mile and the Oaks remains our long term goal.

We would have won about $300 before trainers and jockeys stakes and this money will be deposited into our syndicate account. I suggest that we leave it there for the time being until we build up a decent amount to split. Perhaps $10,000 per 5% share after the Oaks?

I will e-mail once we know where her next start will be and we might have to get a few of us on course.

Mike (view from the box):

Hands up all those that thought we would not get a race when she failed to go in at the first time of asking, having waited for 3 minutes for the previous two horses to be loaded. Fortunately they blindfolded her and led her in, she stopped once she felt the first hand on her flanks, but a little coaxing and she was in.

The stalls opened and she left them swiftly, she was moved up the field from 900m, having to go three wide most of the way, she looked settled at this gallop. The trackside graphics showed her in third with Foxy Boxer in second, but the screen had her in seventh. As they approached the straight with 500m to go she was pushed to make her move, she responded well, then seemed to stall a little, but within a few strides she appeared to understand she had to do more and picked up again for Ronald. She closed in on the leaders quickly and just failed to get third place. To be honest I had tears in my eyes, racing has this effect.

When I watched the head on replay, I noticed that Ronald had lost his whip in the finish but quickly changed to hands and heels to the line. An extra 80m would have seen us in the first three.

Well done to Heather and the Foxy Boxer syndicate on their third place. Still Twiggy has opened her account with prize money for her fourth place.

We learnt a lot about our girl from this run and personally I was pleased to see her galloping and quickening when asked to make a move and then finishing in a similar manner to her mother. She will have also learnt a lot from this positive experience and hopefully she may be loaded earlier next time so that she can settle in the stalls, as I'm sure that other horses playing up behind the stalls do not help.

The Oaks may be a dream, but after this showing it's a possibility.

Summary: Broke well, settled mid-division, progress 900m & 500m, quickened.

Raceform Magazine Comment: Slow, Back 10th , Finished Well..
